The Silver Coast
Only a fifty-minute drive north of Lisbon’s Portela airport has some of the world’s best beaches for both wind and kite surfing along the famous sugar sand beaches of Caleal and Praia D’El Rey. Golf here is nothing less than spectacular, Praia D’El Rey Golf Club, a 7,000-yard pat 72 Cabell Robinson design running adjacent to the cliff-top and out into the dunes Praia D’El Rey beach – voted No 13 by Golf World magazine.
We recommend The Sana Silver Coast Hotel, prices starting at £149 per person, staying in the bustling town of Caldes da Rainha with its famous sulphur spa waters re-known for their healing powers for both skin and bones, and plenty of bars, local restaurants and evening nightlife for the most discerning of golfers. Voted as Portugal’s Best Golf Course for 2015, Severiano Ballesteros’s last golf course design is Royal Obidos GC. This 18 Hole Championship golf course uses the natural terrain to its fullest with spectacular views across the course to the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. The clubhouse here is of particular note with its glass facias, and large balcony’s overlooking the course.
Located overlooking the golf course is the five stars Evolutee Hotel. Its clean lines and modern architecture are a real golfer’s home-from-home prices here starting here at just £222 per person, great value for quality golf and impressive hotel. The hotel is just a short 15-minute drive from Obidos “the walled city”, the Moors built the main castle in 713 AD with the limestone walls surrounding the main keep and the entire city surrounded in the 14th century – certainly not to be missed whilst in the region.
Costa Azul Region
The South of the city and the famous River Tagus are the Costa Azul region, with a further collection of great golf courses to test the most avid of golfers. Sesimbra is a quaint fishing village very much still today influenced by the Moors leaving their stamp on much of its architecture. As first described, the town is one of the best places in Portugal to taste fantastic fresh fish. The “catch-of-the-day” is always a great choice and at incredible value-for-money prices.
Packages start at from £169 per person, staying at the four-star Sesimbra Golf & Spa Hotel. This large modern hotel airy hotel sits alongside the promenade. All hotel rooms benefit from fantastic sea views. The facilities here include indoor and outdoor pools, spa with treatment rooms, and a business centre.
Golf courses in the region are of the highest quality, the best in the area are: Quinta do Peru, Ribagolfe & Aroeira. Quinta do Peru is just a 30 minutes’ drive from Lisbon airport and is one of the golf courses portfolios from the famed golf course designer Rocky Roquemore, the course some 6,640 yards from the back tees is a parkland course which meanders its way through the pine forest. Hence, accuracy off the tee is imperative, watch out for the greens some of the fastest. The golf clubhouse here can only be described as impressive.
The two golf courses at Aroeira have located just a short drive from the coastal town of Caparica, two very different in their layout. The best of the two in our opinion is Aroeira I, the original course designed and opened in 1973 by Frank Pennick, the course is cut between the pine and cork trees and is a very tight, a beautiful golf course with a golf clubhouse of great character as it looks like a log cabin. Rated highly as one of the best courses around, and suited to golfers of abilities.
Ribagolfe also has two golf courses, forty minutes from Lisbon airport – the best of the two (our opinion) is Ribagolfe I. All of the holes here are sheltered from the view of one another by the natural landscape of the cork oak forest that surrounds both golf courses. The golf course is one of the longest too measuring some 7,370 yards from the back tees, very tight land areas mean the accuracy of the tee is a must, good approach shots are rewarded with large generous greens fulfilling a great fair test of golf.
In summary, Lisbon is a fantastic place to play golf at competitive prices, and some of the best golf courses in Portugal has to offer – go ahead take a look you might be pleasantly surprised.
