The Atlantico was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr and is a hilly course, offering tremendous views of local coastal towns, such as Estoril and Cascais near Lisbon. Around half of the holes wind their way through trees, with some tight and undulating fairways adding to the test. There is also a selection of more open holes and this where the water tends to come into play, in addition to well-bunkered greens. Due to the nature of the course, which winds its way uphill at times, the wind can play a part and this adds to the challenge of playing the Atlantico course.
The clubhouse is a great place to relax after a round of golf, it’s modern and comfortable and the resort offers a full range of facilities. The Algarve receives much of the attention when it comes to golf in Portugal but Penha Longa Golf Resort is comfortably one of the best places in the country to play golf.

The overall layout of Atlantico is excellent and the condition of the course is good, just be prepared for some lightning-quick greens, as it can get a little dry at times during the summer months. That being said, it’s wise to take a jacket when playing at Penha Longa Golf Resort, as it can be the chilly first thing and in the evening, even during summer.
The 9-hole Mosteiro course takes in the historical parts of the estate and compliments the Atlantico course in style. It’s not at the same level as the Atlantico but there are some great holes and it’s certainly worth playing when staying at the resort. This course features in our ultimate guide to the best 9 holes of golf in Portugal.
