The Penina Hotel & Golf Resort
Penina Golf Resort is a 360 Select Hotel
Penina golf resort was one of the first resort hotels available for golf holidays in Portugal. The Championship course is celebrating its 51st birthday this year. It was the first 18 hole course to be built there for golf in the Algarve. There's a sense of calm ambience with a "club" atmosphere as most guests are repeat visitors.
Our clients always appreciate the service and attention they receive during their visit. The resort is large and self-contained, with 3 courses on-site including the Penina Championship Course, which Sir Henry Cotton designed. The staff here are almost part of the furniture welcoming returning clients year-after-year, with this attention to detail, you can easily see why it's most famous hotels. Highly recommended.

The Algarve is a two- to three-hour flight from most European capitals and has drawn many savvy golfers for more than five decades.
Although the first course in the Algarve was a short, primitive plan designed between Portimão and Praia da Rocha in the 1920s. Because of a lack of fresh water, the greens were more often referred to as "browns" and were made of a combination of sand and oil. No wonder, a few hardy addicts played this course for only a short time before leaving to make room for property development.
Sir Henry Cotton was the man who put the Algarve on the golfing map. He built the first proper golf grass court in the mid-1960s.
Penina Championship Golf Course was the first of three designs he produced in the Algarve. A location he fell in love with and called home for more than 30 years.
Penina is still one of my favorite golf courses; every time I play, I see "Pacifico" the donkey strolling the fairways. Sir Henry trained a donkey as a caddie to bear his golf bag and his formidable tire, which became a training practice aid for many PGA coaching professionals in the years that followed.
Why not honour your next golf trip with a round on a course designed by the great man.
