Our Golf Holiday Experts View:

Penina is best suited to golfers looking for a traditional, self-contained Algarve golf resort with championship golf and extensive practice facilities on the doorstep. The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course is the headline attraction, while the Resort Course provides a more forgiving option for mixed-handicap groups. It is particularly suitable for couples and golf groups who value convenient on-site golf, spacious grounds and a quieter resort setting.

Golfers wanting restaurants, bars and nightlife immediately outside the hotel may prefer to stay in Alvor or Vilamoura, although Alvor is only a short transfer away.

Penina Hotel represents an authentic Portuguese golfing heritage, and guests often combine their stay with visits to other Algarve golf destinations to experience the region's diverse courses.

Is Penina Hotel & Golf Resort Good for a Golf Holiday?

We visit Penina frequently in Portugal's Western Algarve and, in our opinion, this is one of the best on offer. Penina was the original golf resort in the Algarve and still maintains its traditions and roots. It has almost legendary status among golfers looking to play the Algarve's first golf course. The resort has a tranquil feeling and relaxing, more like a home-from-home with 360 acres of beautifully manicured grounds overlooking the Championship course. It's just under an hour's drive from Faro Airport and is a firm favourite and, in our opinion, one of the best on offer in the Algarve.

The resort also offers a lot for families, including the largest swimming pool in the Algarve, which is genuinely impressive. Once you've tried it, you'll understand the hype even more and want to come back again and again.

Penina Hotel & Golf Resort opened in 1966 and is regarded as the original home of golf in the Algarve. Its Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course was the first 18-hole course built in the region and has hosted the Portuguese Open ten times.

Which Golf Courses Can You Play at Penina?

Penina has it all. Penina golf resort was one of the first resort hotels available for a golf trip. Penina, the birthplace of Algarve golf, welcomes every golfer with a friendly Portuguese attitude and offers championship pedigree and a classic design.

Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course

This resort is a solid favourite among golfers and has a loyal following of guests. With its long history, golfers flock to the area to play the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, one of the most popular courses in the Algarve. The course has hosted the Portuguese Open ten times, cementing its reputation among Europe’s elite. With almost 400,000 trees placed to create strategic challenges and natural beauty, Cotton's vision turned a former rice field into a lush, tree-lined parkland layout.

The Championship course is celebrating its 51st birthday this year. It was the first 18-hole course to be built and is widely known by golfers who choose the Algarve for golf trips. There's a calm ambience with a "club" atmosphere, as most guests are repeat visitors. Many golfers also include playing the 9-hole Resort course in their golf packages. The Academy course is for those just starting out learning this great game.

Signature Holes:

A true risk-reward classic is the 5th hole (Par 5). To avoid bunkers and a diagonal water hazard, the drive must hug the left. Aggressive players can try to reach the green in two, but caution is advised because it is protected by a lake and rear bunker.
With a narrow, tree-lined fairway and an intimidating approach over water to an up-sloping green, the 12th hole (Par 4) is arguably the toughest on the course. Laying up is frequently the wise move.
The 13th hole (Par 3) is a difficult tee shot that requires both accuracy and nerves as it crosses a lake to a well-guarded green.

Penina Resort Course

Relaxed yet rewarding. Water hazards, tree-lined fairways, and strategic bunkering keep things interesting on this 9-hole (or 18 when played twice) course that offers a gentler introduction to golf at Penina. Its inclusion in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary demonstrates Penina's dedication to the environment and wildlife.
