Celtic Manor Golf Resort is regarded as one of the best UK golf resorts and is the brainchild of Sir Terry Matthews, a self-made Welsh billionaire. He returned from Canada, purchasing the land and the original Celtic Manor House. This estate was also the Lydia Beynon maternity hospital, where Terry was born back in 1943. After a mere £150 million investment, Celtic Manor was created, building a brand new golf course and clubhouse in 2009, bringing the Ryder Cup to Wales first in 2010. This event which some say put Golf in Wales on the golf break map, extended into a fourth day, due to heavy rain, before G-Mac (Graeme McDowell) holed a late putt to win the cup for Team Europe.
