Is Salgados Golf Course Worth Playing?

Salgados Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 course near Albufeira, set between Praia da Galé and the Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve. The flat terrain makes it comfortable to walk, but golfers should not mistake that for an easy round.

Water comes into play throughout the course, while the exposed coastal setting means the wind can quickly affect club selection. Salgados is therefore best suited to golfers who enjoy strategic golf, where positioning and accuracy are often more important than distance from the tee.

The course works particularly well as part of an Albufeira golf holiday and can be combined with nearby Morgado and Álamos to give your group three noticeably different rounds.

What Changed at Salgados Golf Course in 2025?

Salgados reopened in February 2025 following a major €3.2 million renovation. The work included a new irrigation system across all 18 holes, reshaped bunkers with new sand, levelled and returfed teeing areas and an expanded lake system.

The biggest change was the creation of a new island green on the par-three 12th hole. The renovation was subsequently named the World’s Best Golf Course Renovation 2025 at the World Golf Awards.

For returning golfers, this means the course should not be judged entirely on older reviews or photographs. The playing surfaces, bunkering and signature hole have all changed significantly since the beginning of 2025.

A Golf Course with Views

One side of Salgados Beach is a protected area home to several birds, while the other features vast, sandy stretches of sand. Links-style golf course with coastal winds blowing and plenty of wildlife. Walking on Salgados Golf Course is an easy and enjoyable experience because of its position, with the greens and tee boxes within a few yards. The yellow tees will ensure that you have an enjoyable round. If you're confident, you can play from the white tees if you have a single-digit handicap or are an experienced player.

Golfers may have a unique experience at this course, home to various endangered bird species. The proximity to the shore and the course's sea views make it a delightful place to play golf.

What Is the Signature Hole at Salgados?

The renovated par-three 12th is now the defining hole at Salgados. Its green is completely surrounded by water and measures approximately 96 metres from the forward tees to 135 metres from the back tees.

It is visually intimidating, but the sensible strategy is straightforward: take enough club to comfortably carry the water and aim towards the centre of the green. Attacking a difficult pin position can quickly turn a promising score into a dropped shot.

The hole was created as part of the 2025 renovation and gives Salgados a more memorable centrepiece, while remaining consistent with the water-based challenge found throughout the course.

The ClubHouse at Salgados

The Clubhouse is a beautiful place to unwind with a cold drink after a long golf day. The terrace facing the golf course is a lovely sun trap, yet the Atlantic wind will keep you cool. The Clubhouse has an extensive draught selection of local and foreign beers and a respectable local wine list. The Steak Sandwich, on the other hand, is a great winner.
