Royal Obidos Golf Course

Royal Obidos is located just short drive north of Lisbon and is very easy to reach, taking no more than 60 minutes from the Portugal capital.

Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort feature the last golf course to be designed by the great Seve Ballesteros and it is worthy of the name. The course plays to just under 7,300 yards off the back tees and is a true test of golf, for players of all abilities.

Do not be deceived by the start to the round, which is a generous par-4 and allows golfers to get off to a good start if played well. However, the course really comes alive on the par-5 2nd hole, which has a tee shot over a road and sets you up facing the lagoon area of the golf course. A series of spectacular holes follow, taking in the view of the water.

The 3rd hole, which is perhaps the pick of the front nine, is a par-3 with a tee shot to an island green and the lagoon setting the perfect backdrop. Having played your way around the first few holes, you will appreciate just what great condition the course is in and this is always the case, whatever time of year you are lucky enough to visit. The front nine holes continue to command tremendous views over the Obidos lagoon.

Water is a prominent feature on the back nine holes and if you are prone to losing balls you will want to come to Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort fully prepared. The system of lakes weave throughout the back nine holes and with the Atlantic Ocean in the background, you know you are going to find the drink if you are not accurate with your shots. A good example of this is the par-4 14th hole and your score on this hole will be made by your approach shot. Although the fairway is quite wide, you must try and find the right side, to have a good angle of approach to the green. The approach shot is played over water to have any chance of making a birdie but if this is out of the question, there is a bailout area to the right which leaves an easier shot to the green. Will you take the risk and attack the green over the water or play it safe? It’s one of the many excellent challenges which awaits you at Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort and your decision making will be key to the score you achieve on the course.

Having completed the 18 holes, head to the clubhouse restaurant for some great food, including authentic Portuguese dishes.
