Spain's oldest golf course is, in fact, not on the mainland; it is here at the heart of the Gran Canaria mountains. Originally, down on the coast adjacent to Las Palmas, the golf course opened in 1891 for traders. Due to urban sprawl, the course was forced to uproot and move to this beautiful mountain retreat in 1891.
Phillip Mackenzie Ross redesigned and set out the course layout, and the course was reborn. Located over 500 metres above sea level and adjacent to the Caldera de Bandama volcanic crater. This location provides stunning views across the course, Central Gran Canaria and out across the North coast of the island.
A relatively short course in modern terms. It has deep ravines guarding the tight, narrow fairways leading up to small, immaculately cut greens. Numerous greens are raised, so sometimes playing blind, so caution should always be observed. The course winds out around the volcanic crater, before the fairways head out up into the hills, with the back 9 heading back into the golf clubhouse.
The golf clubhouse sits high above both the 9th and 18th greens with spectacular views across the course, without doubt one of the most memorable 19th holes there is in Spain.
A great test of golf, and when we played it last in March 2024, it was in pristine condition, well worth the drive up to visit a must-play golf course.
Situated alongside the Caldera de Bandama volcanic crater (which in strict geological terms, is actually a maar and not a caldera) the course boasts fabulous views of central Gran Canaria and the northwest coastline of the island.
It’s a relatively short track which is characterised by narrow fairways, deep ravines and small greens. A round here starts by skirting along and around the old crater before the fairways head into the hills to the west, then return back down to the clubhouse for the closing stretch.
Many of the putting surfaces are raised and, whilst not overly protected by bunkers, they present a real challenge to golfers who must fly their approach shot high then try to hold the green. As for the driving range, it’s one of the quirkiest anywhere, with practice shots blasted down into the old crater!
David Williams developed a master plan for the club in 2018, which has yet to be implemented. It was rumoured that work was to start in 2022 with tree removal, bunker renovation, new forward tees and the introduction of a reservoir at the top of the architect’s wish list. We’ll keep a close eye on any developments.
