Where to Stay: Westin La Quinta Golf Resort
Located just a five-minute drive away from the resort of Puerto Banus, it is very easy to reach from the town, which makes a great base for playing golf in Marbella.
Designed by Manuel Pinero and Antonio Garrido, two names you may be familiar with from the Ryder Cup, La Quinta is a golf course that can be enjoyed by players of all abilities. So, whether you are a beginner or experienced golfer, you can add this course to your itinerary when booking golf holidays in the Costa del Sol.
Having opened for play as an 18-hole course in 1989, it has since expanded and now boasts a 27-hole complex for visitors to enjoy. The 27 holes have been split into three nine-hole loops and each offers tremendous views of the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.
For those who like nothing more than to let rip with the driver, the San Pedro is the one for you. A par-71 course playing to 3,154 yards, the fairways are wider than the other two loops of nine holes and the whole course has a nice, open feel to it. Big drives and long iron approach shots are the order of the day on the San Pedro Course.
The second set of nine holes is known as the Ronda and this is much tighter. It may be the shortest of three sets of nine, but despite playing to 2,972 yards from the tips, the course is not to be underestimated thanks to some tricky greens.
If you would like to play the championship course, you must combine San Pedro with the third set of nine, called the Guadaiza. In contrast to the Ronda, this is the longest of three sets of nine holes, measuring 3,344 yards from the tips.
The 2nd and 7th on the Guadaiza are two of the best at La Quinta, with changes in elevation and doglegs to contend with. This course, along with San Pedro has been used on the European Tour and the condition of all three sets of nine holes is fantastic. The greens are true and coupled with the high level of service from the staff, it’s little wonder it being talked about in the same breath as the top golf courses in Spain.
La Quinta may not be the toughest golf course you will ever play but it will certainly be one of the most enjoyable.
