Where to Stay: Sheraton Mallorca Arabella
One of the stars of the Mediterranean, Mallorca is a very popular island with visitors and it’s easy to see why. The coast is one of the most stunning you will see anywhere in the world. Away from the built-up resorts, the beaches are fantastic, having maintained their charm. The local cuisine is very tasty and the inland terrain is ideal for those who enjoy hiking and cycling. However, one aspect of Mallorca which rounds it off as the perfect destination is the superb choice of golf courses. Indeed, one of the best on the island must be Club de Golf Alcanada.
Situated in the Balearics of Spain. Northeast of Mallorca, Golf Alcanada is often voted as being the best golf course on the island. And by taking one look at what it has to offer, it becomes hard to disagree. With mountains on one side and a glistening sea on the other. This is a golf course that provides contrasting, yet striking views, whichever way you happen to be playing your shot. Perhaps the best view on the course can be found on the 13th tee, with a shot heading towards the bay of Alcanada and the lighthouse, which sits on the island of Aucanada.
However, the first hole at Club de Golf Alcanada leaves you in no doubt as to the test which lies ahead, as being in an ‘L’ shape, golfers must decide whether to hit over the vegetation to the green, or play safe and use the fairway. Moving through the course, you may notice a camera on the tee of the 7th hole, this is recording your drive and if you wish, you can scan the bar code you were given in the clubhouse, into the machine and the footage will become available to view on the computer. You can also have it emailed to you, so if you happen to hit the perfect drive on this hole, it will be captured forever. No pressure.
From this hole, the course drops down towards the sea and you soon forget about that horribly sliced drive you made on the 7th, which has been captured forever. One of the best holes at Club de Golf Alcanada, is the par-5, 13th hole, which is short at 496 yards and plays downhill, giving everyone the opportunity to make the green in two and have an attempt at making eagle. The best short hole must be the par-3, 17th hole, which is basic in its design but with four bunkers in line with the green, an accurate short iron is a must on this hole.
Having completed the round, the terrace is the best place to head for some refreshment. The views over the course and out to the sea are excellent and it’s the perfect way to finish a great day of golf. There is little doubt, having played at Club de Golf Alcanada, you will walk away with a big smile on your face and it’s one of the top golf courses in Mallorca.
