Spey Valley Completes the golfing triangle between Royal Dornach and Naim. The course opened for play in 2006 and is a great example that inland golf in Scotland is just as interesting as the traditional Links layouts.
Located a mere 50 minutes from some of Speyside's most famous distilleries like Tamdhu, The Macallan and Glenfiddich. The Macdonald Spey Valley Resort is a very popular golfing destination in Scotland.
Designed by none other than Dave Thomas who was also responsible for the Brabazon course at The Belfry.
Spey Valley holds a Par of 72 and is set in stunning Highland terrain. The Course is Undoubtedly one of the best inland courses Scotland has to offer. Scenic, challenging and inspiring.
The Long Walk from the first green to the second tee box is entirely worthwhile where seventeen further holes of great championship golf await. It’s difficult to do justice to just how incredible and inspiring the terrain and land of the Cairngorm National Park is.
The course holds some truly majestic holes winding through impenetrable heather and well-aged treelines with the Cairngorm mountains as an ever prevalent backdrop to this stunning golf course.
With very stereotypical Dave Thomas bunkering, Bunkers will come into play for almost every tee shot and approach shots to the green.
The Greens are very firm and play fast and hard, But that is what you no doubt would come to expect from playing golf in Scotland.
Spey Valley has a very traditional routing with nine holes out and nine back towards the clubhouse and almost every hole is worthy in taking a claim to the signature.
For us, we feel that the 16th hole deserves our special mention.
An elevated tee stroke needs to be long and accurate avoiding the purple flowering heather. The little loop of holes played over Loch Megan are a real treat for the eyes and a challenge for the clubhead. Find the fairway and you are presented with a great second shot to a green protected well with bunkers and subtle contours.
If you are considering a trip to the Speyside, then we highly recommend the Macdonald Aviemore Resort. But don’t take our word for it PGA Professional Brookes Kopka clearly also enjoys the resort too and holds the course record on this wonderful piece of Scottish Highlands land. One of the best golf courses in Scotland whilst visiting the Highlands.
