For golfers living in Europe, the weather can make playing golf difficult, especially in the winter months.
Snow, wind, rain combine to make the prospect of playing a round of golf less appealing but thankfully, there are other options. One of which can be found in the Canary Islands.
The Canary Islands boast a warm climate throughout the year and the temperature on Fuerteventura remains around the 20-degree mark, even in winter. Despite being known for its sand and wind, the island makes a great place to play golf and Club Salinas de Antigua is one of the most popular courses on Fuerteventura.
Located only 8 kilometers south of the international airport which means you can step straight off the plane and onto the golf course.
The main FV-2 road runs along the coast and next to the entrance to the golf club and you will have little trouble finding it form the airport, via hire car or taxi.
With an average temperature of 24 degrees, the course does not get as hot as those on the south of mainland Spain, Club Salinas de Antigua is a great choice at any time of year.
The 18-hole course was designed by two-time world golf champion Manolo Piñeiro and plays to a par-70, which is not the most common par for an 18-hole course.
As with other resorts on Fuerteventura, the wind has a role to play and while the sand dunes can protect golfers from some of the gusts, it is still something which you must consider when choosing your club and planning approach shots.
There are many features to the course and the most prominent is the water, with four lakes, the first of which comes into play on the 4th hole. You have the option to play aggressively and attempt to clear the water on approach to the green or play around the water on the fairway. The wind can often be the determining factor.
Playing strategically rather than trying to hit the ball long is the favoured approach by many and if you enjoy being creative on the course, you will have a great time playing at Golf Club Salinas de Antigua.
Away from the course, the Club has some excellent facilities for you to enjoy. Spacious putting greens, a driving range and pro-shop cover the golfing side of things nicely.
You will also find a café and restaurant, boasting a lovely choice of wine from the cellar. There is also the option to book a stay at the one of their two hotels, with the Geranios Suites and Spa Hotel plus Barceló Fuerteventura Thalasso Spa both good options.
