King Hussan II commissioned the Royal Dar Es Salam golf course, which was originally designed and built by famous golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Snr on a massive site just 15 minutes from the capital Rabat. This meant the creation of 45 holes of stunning golf, the Red and Blue 18 Championship each and the Green 9 Holes.
The golf club is designed in typical Royal style, ie fit-for-a-king and even when entering the club via the imposing mosaic gatehouse, where you receive a Royal salute. The driveway to the impressive clubhouse is tree-lined by Cork Oaks, with their peeling and gnarled bark revealing their pink trunks, giving an even more agist feel, and the sense of anticipation gets stronger the nearer you get.
This outstanding Championship layout is not for the faint-hearted, measuring at just over 7,372 yards from the back Tee. This original Trent Jones Sr. layout first hosted the Trophée Hassan II in 2010, the year after it moved to Golf du Palais Royal d’Agadir for five years.
2016 brought a redesign by James Duncan in collaboration with his Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, an upgrade of the bunkers, widening of the fairways, and each and every one of the greens re-designed. This had the desired effect as the event then returned to what is now the Red Course in 2016, where it has remained ever since and is now designates as one of the DP Tours most difficult tests, and will host again 21-23 May 2026.
