North Berwick Golf Club (West Links)
Home to the original Redan, The Biarritz inspired green.
The Course we see today at North Berwick has really only been in play since 1832, Although golf has been played on the land for much longer than that.
The West Links is an incredibly enjoyable and enchanting experience and has been designed to take golfers three hours to get around with fantastic use of land and a number of shorter but technically difficult holes. Although each hole at North Berwick does provide a test of ability, The course will not punish you in a way to defer from one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf you can play.
The course is a challenge much more ancient than modern with blind tee shots and sloping greens carved into the natural layout of the golf course and cobbled stone walls protecting greens and tee boxes.
North Berwick has fascinated Holiday golfers for over a century postcard seaside setting, peculiar design features that have been studied and replicated worldwide, and a traditional links golfing experience.
A Course Studied by Architects for years.
North Berwick West Links has had a number of holes that have been studied and recreated globally. The most famous and notable are:
- The 13th (“Pit”). This is a particularly quaint and short par 4 dogleg to the left. An imaginative approach is needed to land on a sunken green protected by a wall. Take time to look west and enjoy the view to Fidra, thought to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island”.
- The 14th (“Perfection”). The second shot is a blind shot over a big hill to a green that sits incredibly tight to the beach. Two ‘Perfect’ Shots are required here to be able to walk away with a Par.
- The 15th (“Redan”). This green is inspired by the Biarritz design green and is a decent length par 3 to a green angled against the line of the tee shot. The putting surface makes full use of the large mound behind the bunkers in front of the dancefloor which effectively blocks player’s view of the green. Take aim and hit straight between the bunkers and you will see your ball emerge hopefully running towards the pin.
North Berwick West Links is one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf in the Country and one that true golf geeks will enjoy due to its tremendous and celebrated golf course design.
