Golf at Gullane can be dated as far back as 1650. In 1884 Willie Park Jnr laid down the first course at Gullane Golf Club, in 1898 The number 2 course was open, and in 1910 the third in the trilogy of great golf links was completed.
Gullane Golf Club is a private members' club with three traditional and superb links courses. With a noticeable history, stunning views over the sea and Gullane Hill and as always incredible and warming hospitality, Gullane is a destination that should be included in any east Lothian Golf Tour.
Gullane No. 1 is the oldest course of 14 years at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland. Established in 1884, it is world-famous for its silky smooth greens, links conditions and extensive bunkering. Combine with prevailing winds and stunning vistas, and you are in for a real test of golf.
Gullane No 1 is a tad unusual for a classic links golf course in that there are many downhill and elevated tee shots to play. This adds to the experience and makes Gullane even more enjoyable.
In 2018, Gullane hosted the European Tour: the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, which Brandon Stone won. 16 of the Holes were used from the number 1 course with two holes from the number 2 course.
The 7th Hole was actually a hard decision as the 3rd hole is actually our favourite golf hole. However, we have to pick the 7th due to views like none other. From an Elevated tee box at the summit of Gullane Hill, you will be treated to panoramic views over the links of Gullane 1,2 & 3, Muirfield and Luffness new course. This is one of the best views in golf. Look to the left, and you will see Edinburgh and the Forth bridges, straight ahead of the Firth of Forth and Fife Turn to your right Muirfield and Gullane Beach. This is also a hole that plays significantly downhill, so letting rip is also a great joy.
Gullane No 2 was Bernard Darwin's favourite out of the three courses and was quoted as "One of the most beautiful spots in the world." in The Times, 1934. Gullane No 2 is by no means an easier test than number one, despite being a bit shorter in length. Of course, it would be wrong to say that the second course at Gullane is the best in town. Course Number 1 and Muirfield are very tough competitors to beat. However, number 2 does keep pace and at over half the price of number 1 and a third of Muirfield makes this a formidable competitor.
11th - Par 3 | The 11th hole is a stunning Par 3, at over 215 yards from the championship tees, the opening shot requires a full carry over the first 3 bunkers at around 170 yards gully will feed the ball down towards the putting surface and the hole. Fly it all the way, and you will need some stopping power. A perfect par 3 that optimises links golf brilliantly.
The third course at Gullane may be the shortest of the three, but by no means, much less of a test, What's great about the third course is that is entire of equal standard to no 1 and 2, but will not beat you up. The course is fair, and if you are looking at a quick round of golf Gullane, no 3 is perfect. In the winter the greens are known to be the best in the whole country, and the fairways run true and fast.
I could not think of many better weekends than one playing all three of the Gullan golf courses with Muirfield on the agenda too if booked far enough in advance.
