Unusual Golf Course Visitors

back

One of the great things about playing golf, is the fact that it gives us a chance to get outside and breathe in the open air. Some of the world’s greatest golf courses, due to their location, also offer stunning scenery but with that, can come some unwelcome guests.

Now we all see birds on a daily basis and having them on or around a golf course is nothing new. However, when they start interfering with your golf ball, that’s a different matter entirely. Recently, an Eagle appeared at the 12th hole at North Bellingham Golf Course and took a liking to a ball on the green. In fact, it liked the ball so much, it decided to take it away and flew off with it in it’s mouth. Perhaps if your ball was out of bounds or in the rough you wouldn’t mind but on the green, come on!

Birds aren’t the only animals that have taken a shine to golf balls. An iguana took a shine to Andrew Loupe’s ball, which was also on the green, during the final round of the 2014 Puerto Rico Open. Unfortunately for the iguana, it couldn’t quite get a grip of the situation and soon fled the scene.

This next one, is not a ‘visitor’ as such but is definitely worth a mention.

On a more serious note, Patrick Bowman, works at Okinawa Golf Club, which is in Japan. On more than one occasion, Bowman has come across World War II bombs and unexploded ammunition. When this happens, the whole area has to be closed off and teams are called in to blow them up.

That may be more sobering than amusing but when Andi Dzilums was playing at the Fairmont in Western Canada, he had a shock when approaching the green. Putting was out of the question for Dzilums, as a bear cub had already beaten him to the flag. Not only was the bear cub on the green, it also decided to have a dance with the flag and if nothing else, provided some added entertainment to the round.

A group of golfers had a shock at Palmetto Golf Course when a homeless man appeared on the fairway. That man was Kenny Bethel and it turned out, he had been living on the golf course since 1963. Not only that, his wife also lived on the course and he had been selling lost golf balls to earn money.

And finally, an amateur golfer had a bit of shock when approaching the 11th hole at his local course with friends. As they approached the tee, there was already a couple on it but they were playing a different game altogether. The couple continued about their ‘business’ and the group moved on to the 12th tee but did wonder, if they should have asked if they could play through!
