Big, undulating greens – which can get very fast in summer – generate a tricky test combined with whipping winds, mature trees and many water features occupying 6 of the 18 holes set you up for a stern test of golf. There's a very totally different experience on the two nine holes one is almost an inland links-style and the other is very parkland so examining every element of your game. For its defense, the first half counts on long rugged rough and water features; the back half plots its way around huge, overhanging oak and beech trees. The Golf course features no bunkers but is certainly not a walk in the park and precession from the tee will be required.
If you want a long weekend with golf and some amazing history, spa pampering, and gourmet food can be combined, Luton Hoo offers the lot. The lavish Bedfordshire facility experienced some spectacular post-war scenes when Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke to a crowd of 110,000 to thank them for their loyalty during the Second World War. Churchill tanks, made by Vauxhall Motors in nearby Luton, were tested here with concreted gravel drives.
