Location

The course is situated a short 20-minute drive from Faro, making it very quick and easy to reach from the airport. Anyone flying to the Algarve for a golfing break will be landing in Faro, so even with the flight time in mind, it’s possible to leave the UK and be on the first tee, in a matter of hours.

Course

Perhaps the most beautiful feature of this golf course is the way it makes use of the natural terrain on which it was designed. Frank Pennink, who was an English Amateur Golfing Championship winner in 1937 and 1938, designed the Oceanic Old Course and it’s considered to be one of the best in the world. A parkland style course, reminiscent of some of the best inland courses in the United Kingdom, the course was provided with an upgrade in 1997, including a brand new irrigation system.

The course itself is superbly maintained, the gently sloping fairways are always in great condition and come lined with pine trees throughout, which are clearly well looked after. The course can be challenging and straight driving is crucial to success, as anything left and right will be in amongst the aforementioned trees.

The Old Course is quite rare in the fact it’s a par-73 and plays to 6254 meters. The first four holes have the ability to lull players into a false sense of security. Yes, a wayward drive will result in a difficult second shot but accurate tee shots will result in a fairly straightforward start to the round. However, moving into the rest of the front nine and 100% concentration is required, with shot placement and club selection paramount.

In addition to the trees, water and bunkers also play their part on the Oceanic Old Course and the latter is a strong feature on the 12th, where they are deep and well placed. The greens around the course are small and can be difficult to hit but once the putter comes out, they are fast and true, exactly what the majority of players are looking for in a good green.
