If you want to play one of the most spectacular courses in the Canary Islands, then head to the island of La Gomera and play a round at Tecina.
La Gomera is one of the smallest of the main islands in the Canary Islands and while many people know Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, La Gomera remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism.
If you are looking for the beaches and nightlife associated with some of the Canary Islands highlighted above, La Gomera is probably not the place for you. However, if a round of golf at a very picturesque course in addition to small mountain villages, winding ravines, and limited tourists sounds tempting, Tecina Golf on La Gomera is indeed the place for you.
To reach the Tecina Golf, you must first get to La Gomera and to do that you can fly to Tenerife and get a ferry across from Los Cristianos, of which there is three daily weather permitting. You can either book a stay on the island or come across for the day and enjoy a round of golf.
Although they are owned by the Fred Olsen group, the course is part of the hotel Jardin Tecina complex and is located on the south side of the island within a former banana plantation.
This club has played host to the Canary Islands Championship plus a European Challenge Tour event and given the location and views from the course, it is easy to see why it was chosen for such prestigious events.
Featuring a splendid selection of indigenous plants, flowers, and cacti which have been planted in such a way as to frame the course nicely but also allow the magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean and Mount Teide to come into view.
The 18 holes start at the top of the course and wind their way down over 500 feet to reach the clubhouse at the bottom.
Therefore, many of the holes are playing downwards towards the green. Good examples of this are holes 4, 10 and 12 which are all considered signature holes at Tecina Golf.
The course measures 6,900 yards from the back tees and although not easy, is suitable for players of all abilities. The fairways are wide on many of the holes and the greens are often exposed, meaning you can play attacking shots.
However, as you wind your way up to the first tee on your buggy, you will immediately be captured by the beauty of the marvellous views over the ocean. Even if you are having an off day with the clubs, you will still enjoy playing the course thanks to the tremendous set-up and location.
Whether you are staying on La Gomera or making a day trip from Tenerife, this club is not to be missed.
