The Nicklaus Course
The Nicklaus Signature golf course at St Mellion is a real gem and one of the finest golf courses in Europe. Jack quoted upon completion of the course which opened in 1998
“I knew it was going to be good but not this good” And if it is good enough for the Golden Bear then it is good enough for us. The Signature course has held some fantastic tournaments over the years and most notably the B+H International Open where Jose Maria Olazabal, Seve Ballesteros, and Bernhard Langer have all been victorious.
Although not overly long at just over 6200 yards this course is a tough golf course with plenty of elevation changes and tight required tee shots. The golf course features its very own “Amen Corner” around the 10th, 11th and 12th holes and these really are standout and live long in the memory. The 11th is a true gem of a par 3, An elevated tee shot awaits you to a green 203 yards away where you first have to clear and navigate around a river running through the left-hand side and front of this tricky green, walking away with a Par on the 11th hole is a great result. Our favourite hole on the course though would be the signature hole. The par 5 12th hole, which is a tight drive over the lake through a narrow tree-lined valley with a stream running almost the length of the hole; on the right-hand side, before cutting back in in front of a green and where anything short is wet. A really tricky hole that will test every piece of skill that you process.
The St Mellion golf resort is one of the most beautiful golf resorts in the whole of Europe, and the Nicklaus courses is not just ranked highly in the UK’s top 100 but also the 4th best golf course in Cornwall too. Why not make St Mellion your next UK golf Break and test your skills on this true Championship layout.
The Kernow Course
The Old course as it was called back in 1976 when it first opened for play became one of the most famous golf courses in the whole of the Uk to play. The Old course even was part of the European Tour schedule hosting the Benson & Hedges International Open.
The Old Course was given a complete renovation in 2008 as part of the huge rebirth of the St Mellion golf resort. The course was renamed the Kernow, and has been recognised as the one of the very best 2nd Golf courses on a 36 Hole complex in the UK. The Kernow course is very popular with wider fairways than the Nicklaus layout and larger greens which make scoring that little bit easier.
The Kernow is equally as easy on the eye as the Nicklaus Signature, and we do highly recommend a game when staying at St Mellion The Kernow is an outstanding course with a great blend of holes.
Our Favourite Hole would be the par 3 14th Hole, which is 174 yards from the back tees and requires a crisply struck iron shot that just can not be left short. Anything with not enough club will be sure to land in the pond in front of the green which has some cruel slopes from left to right, A fantastic par 3 where walking away with a three is a great job.
