About this course

Location: Lisbon coast
Yards: 6599
Par: 73
Slope: 123

Orizonte Lisbon Golf is home to several top quality golf courses and one every visitor to this region of Portugal should play is Santo Estêvão.

This golf course opened for play in 2004 and was designed by Donald Steel, the man who was the first golf course architect since Harry Colt in 1913 to carry out significant work at St Andrews.

The Englishman comes with a great reputation in golf course design and has produced the goods once more.

Location

The great thing about all the golf courses owned by Orizonte Golf is their proximity to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. This makes travelling to Santo Estêvão very easy and international flights to Lisbon are available from around the world.

Just a 40 minute drive from the airport or the centre of the city will take you Santo Estêvão, which is situated perfectly in the rolling green landscape of the Northern Alentejo region.

Slightly further inland than many of Portugal’s famous golf courses, to the north of Lisbon but within easy reach of the city and the Atlantic coast line.

Course

Unlike many golf courses, it is a par-73 course and provides a great test of strategic thinking thanks to the well placed bunkers and greens. Playing to just under 7,000 yards, the front nine is quite flat but water comes into play on the 3rd and 7th holes.

You will be tempted to get the driver out but cannot afford to be wayward off the tee due to the clever bunkering. However, this is a golf course which can offer low scores if played with care and planning. Thinking about where you want the ball to land for the best approach to the green is key and will result in lower scores.

The back nine holes are more undulating and all 18 holes blend in nicely with the surroundings, with the natural grass of the region being used as the rough. Despite the more undulating nature of the back nine, Santo Estêvão is a pleasure to walk and you can enjoy a relaxing day on the course without the feel of being rushed.

The pick of the back nine holes is the 11th and this par-4 features a large bunker in the middle of the fairway which must be avoided before playing an approach to the green. This hole is slightly elevated and offers great views of the largest lake on the course.

Santo Estêvão will not be the most challenging course you will ever play but if you want a great day of golf in pleasant surroundings, you cannot go wrong.
