What better place for a round of golf, than Marbella, on the South coast of Spain? The area is both well developed, with five star hotels, top quality restaurants and high end stores but also comes with supreme natural beauty, including lovely sandy beaches and picturesque rolling countryside. It’s an ideal area, to play a round of golf.

Location

Located 8 miles east of Marbella, along the A-7, is the beautiful Santa Maria Golf and Country Club. Located just 200 metres from one of Marbella’s best beaches, the golf club is nestled nicely between small valleys, pine trees and cork oaks. The front nine and back nine holes were designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido and a technical team from within the club respectively, having begun life as a 9-hole course in 1991.

Course

By playing your way around the course, which is a traditional, in and out parkland route, you soon begin to notice where the new set of holes is beginning, as the course uses a tunnel to cross to the new fairways and this tunnel takes you under the motorway.

The course is always in great condition and provides a good challenge for those enjoying a golf holiday in this region of Spain. The layout is varied, interesting and not too long, making it ideal for players of all abilities. Working its way through hills and valleys, with tremendous views to enjoy throughout, accuracy is the key to hitting a low score at Santa Maria Golf and Country Club, especially on the front nine holes. However, the back nine holes play a little shorter than the front nine, even though you are likely to be getting out the driver more often on the longer holes, as you work your way back to towards the clubhouse.

Interestingly, there are four par-3 holes on the back nine and although there is water, in the way of four ponds, they do not really provide much of a threat. Bunkers are present throughout the round but they are not hugely significant on the fairways, being more prevalent around the greens. Talking about the greens, these have to go down as being one of the main features of the golf course, as they are in excellent condition and provide a true putting surface.
