Quinta da Marinha Golf Course Details
Originally designed by world renowned golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones Snr and opened for play in 1984, Quinta da Marinha is home to a luxurious five-star resort and world class 18-hole golf course. The course is laid out among pine trees, on mostly flat ground and is situated just inland from the Atlantic Coast, something which is noticeable by the holiday apartments which flank some of the fairways. The resort has worked on the golf course in recent years and this has not only kept in great condition but added to the enjoyment of playing a round golf, with some nice adjustments.
Set between the Atlantic coast and Sintra Mountains, there are some lovely views to enjoy while playing a round of golf at Quinta da Marinha but once you tee off from the first, the golf course demands much of your attention.
As one would expect from a golf courses designed by Trent Jones Snr, there are several elevated greens and tees and bunkers are the main hazard throughout the 18 holes. Water also comes into play, especially on the 13th hole, which requires a shot over a lake and the 18th hole, which sees water flanking both sides of the fairway. Confidence in club selection is key on both holes, if the water is to be avoided.
The round at Quinta da Marinha starts with a tee shot through a narrow avenue of trees but it’s the 3rd hole where the fun really begins. A par-4 hole, the first thing you will notice are the stunning views of Atlantic Ocean and the scenery on this hole has made it one of the most popular in Portuguese golf. In fact, the photo from the tee box has been used to promote golf in Portugal many times and you will see why when you tee up your ball and settle into your stance. It’s breath-taking but you must think about your angle of approach for your second shot into the green, which slopes away from you.
Having played the 3rd hole, gear yourself up for a par-3, this time with a tee shot over a ravine to a narrow green. As mentioned above, club selection is important on this golf course and no more so than here, with the ravine coming into play if you are too short and a difficult chip back towards the ravine if you go long. It’s a tricky but very exciting hole to play. Another great par-3 hole at Quinta da Marinha is the 13th, which features a tee shot over water, to an elevated green which is well protected by four bunkers. Again, you must have confidence in your club selection or face the consequences, on what is a challenging par-3 hole.
Quinta da Marinha is a great Resort course, with wide-open fairways guarded by umbrella pines. The 16th is the signature hole a short par 3 over the natural barranca, watch out for the bunker guarding it too!
