Having opened for play in 2003, Morgado Golf is one of the newest additions to golf in the Algarve and has developed a reputation for being one of the tougher layouts in this region of Portugal. The course is part of the NAU Hotels and Resorts group.
The course was designed by Russell Talley of European Golf Design and has been met with many positive reviews. The Open de Portugal returned to the European Tour after a seven-year absence in 2017 and Morgado Golf was selected as the host venue for the tournament.
Morgado will again host the “Open de Portugal” in 2019 and therefore be closed for general play between 03-13 May, re-opening again on the 14th of May 2019.
As mentioned above, the course is not an easy ride and if you are looking for anything other than a great test of your ability, you may want to look elsewhere. A par-73 course, Morgado Golf is long from the back tees, playing to 7,197 yards but there is a choice of three tee positions on each hole, with the shortest being 5,600 yards, which is considerably shorter.
While the first few holes are flat and can feel quite bland, things soon begin to change and the course opens up and come into its own. Following the first three holes, the fairways widen and with elevated tee boxes and undulating raised greens offering a tremendous round of golf.
This course is not a European Tour destination for nothing and the 9th hole is a real beauty. The par-4 features a fairway which has a slight left and plays uphill to a magnificent two-tiered green. This is where accurate approach play becomes important at Morgado Golf and you if end up on the wrong tier or off the opposite side of the green to the pin, you are in trouble.
Having completed the 9th hole, the difficulty of the course increases as the fairways become more undulating and greens more challenging. The 18th is a great way to finish the round and the heavily undulating green is proceeded by a well bunkered fairway.
Top players can score well, but for amateur players, be prepared for a good test on what is an excellent layout.
Situated between Portimao and Monchique and surrounded by nature, making for a very picturesque setting. Despite being surrounded by fields and hills, the course is quick and easy to reach, especially from Faro Airport.
Taking the A22 from the airport, you can stay on this road before continuing on the N124 for only 4 miles before arriving at Morgado Golf. The journey is under an hour and can be completed with a hire car, taxi or shuttle transfer.
Due to the location, you have great access to the interior countryside but also the coast and can combine playing golf at Morgado Golf with hilly walks or relaxing days at the beach.
