Sports fans will probably know the name Estoril, which has been made famous for hosting Formula 1 and other motorsports such as Moto GP at the Estoril circuit. However, other sports are also popular in this Portuguese town, including golf.
The pick of the golf courses is undoubtedly Estoril Golf Club, which was established in 1929. Following the opening of the course, Philip Mackenzie Ross remodeled the original 9 holes and added an additional 9 holes to make the main 18 hole course we see today.
This Golf Club is regarded as one of the most important golf clubs in Portugal and was instrumental in forming the Portuguese Golf Federation. The course has played host to the National Open Championship of Portugal many times between 1953 and 1987, hence the popularity of this golf course being including on many golfers Lisbon golf holiday packages.
Location: Lisbon coast
Estoril Golf Club Details
Estoril Golf Club now features a total of 27 holes, with the main 18 hole course being rather short by modern standards. The 5,689 yard course plays to a par-69 but despite lacking in length, remains a good course thanks to the narrow fairways. There are only two par-5 holes, so those who lack a little length off the tee will enjoy this course.
The course is quite hilly and there are several standout holes, including the short downhill 3rd hole and the dogleg 9th hole. Both are par-4’s and the 3rd hole is very short, playing to just 320 yards off the back tees. However, do not underestimate the importance of the tee shot and where you want to leave the ball for your approach to the green.
Finding the greens is arguably the toughest aspect of playing at this Golf Club and while you will have little problem in reaching them, poor placement off the tee can make landing the ball on the green tough. It’s easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when playing this golf course due to the short length but anything off the fairway makes finding the green difficult.
Estoril Golf Club is not going to make you work hard but it’s a picturesque course, full of history and makes a great addition to any Portuguese golf holiday.
Located in the municipality of Cascais, on the Portuguese Riviera. Thanks to it position west of Lisbon, the Golf Club is easy to reach and golfers can fly to the Portuguese capital before making the simple journey along the A5 in to the golf course. The journey should take no more than 45 minutes and you can be on the golf course in under 90 minutes.
In addition to the golf course, Estoril has many boroughs dotted along the coastline and is home to Casino Estoril, which is regarded as the biggest casino in Europe. If you enjoy playing golf and fancy a flutter on the roulette table, Estoril is a great place to visit.
