Costa Adeje, is one of the new areas of development in southern Tenerife. Close to the lively nightlife of the bars and clubs, yet far enough away to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing holiday, offering the best of both worlds. The hotels are very good and in terms of playing golf, there is a great course available, called Golf Costa Adeje.
A Jose Pepe Gancedo Design
Created in the late 1980’s, before much of the current development in the area had taken place. The course was designed by Jose ‘Pepe’ Gancedo, the same person who was responsible for Golf del Sur, which can also be found on the island of Tenerife.
The Championship course is somewhat unusual, in that it incorporates an even split of par-3’s, par-4’s and par-5’s, with six of each featured throughout the 18 holes. The course runs alongside the ocean and has a small number of palm trees dotted throughout but not enough to make them come into play on any of the holes, as a significant hazard.
Much like Golf del Sur, one of the standout features is the black volcanic sand waste bunkers, some of which are very large. You will often find golfers stopping, if time allows, to take pictures of these, which are in stark contrast to the grass of the fairways. However, in 2008, the course management decided to remove the black sand in the greenside bunkers and replace it with traditional sand.
Another interesting feature is the stone walls which can be seen throughout the course. These were originally used to divide the former banana plantations, which were present on the site prior to the opening of the golf course. The stone walls can create different levels to the fairways, which presents an interesting and unique challenge.
The fairways are generally nice and wide, making it an ideal golf course for players of all levels. Having said that, the ball often sits down in the rough, which can make approach shots difficult, if the fairways are missed. The course is always in great condition, whatever the time of year and can easily be walked, for those who prefer not to use a buggy. There are lovely views of the mountains in the distance and islands can be spotted out to sea, such as La Gomera.
Golf Costa Adeje provides a good challenge, to golfers of all abilities and with interesting features, such as the stone walls, is a course that lives long in the memory.
