Malaga is a city which has often found itself in the shadow of other historic cities in the Andalucian region of Spain such as Granada, Seville and Cordoba.

However, Malaga has grown in popularity in recent years and this is thanks in no small part to the number of high quality golf courses which surround the city. Malaga has emerged as one of the top destinations in the whole of Spain for a golf holiday and one of the best golf courses close to the city is Alhaurín Golf Club.

Location

The most noticeable thing on arrival is the location and this golf course is set in the mountains, between the beach town of Mijas and the small inland town of Coin.

However, do not allow the splendour of the location to take your eye off the ball as this is a golf course which demands your full attention if you want to score low.

Course

This 18-hole course opened for play in 1994 and was designed by the great Seve Ballesteros. One of the biggest tests facing any golfer on this course is the terrain, which is very hilly throughout and you must get your thinking cap on as you play your way around the course.

Knowing the distance you can hit each club is very important on this golf course and there are many ups and downs on the fairways so you must be fully confident in your club selection to make the right play.

Accuracy is very important on every shot around the course, so full concentration is required because with several fairways clinging to the edge of the Mijas mountains, lost balls have been known to become a common feature of rounds at Alhaurín Golf Club.

However, do not let that deter you from booking a tee time at what is a wonderful golf course, kept in magnificent condition throughout the year.

This club does not receive the same attention as many of the other well-known courses in Malaga but that makes it somewhat of a hidden gem and you can feel far away from the tourist spots around this region of Spain when on the course.

In addition to the undulating fairways, the greens provide a good test and run very fast. Simply finding the green is not good enough on this course and you must pay attention to the contours of the putting surface when playing your approach shots.

The same can be said for the fairway and thinking about exactly how to use the flow of the land to your advantage can pay huge dividends.
