There are so many golf courses that are popular and known to everyone, the following are 9 great golf courses, perhaps not known so much to the everyday golfer, but still available through 360 Golf Holidays to each-and-every-one of you. These are all hand-picked by us, these are in our opinion as good as it gets!
Carvalhal, Lisbon, Portugal
Troia golf course is located on the Troia peninsula, just a 45-minute drive south of Lisbon Portela Airport. Access to the golf course from Lisbon is via a Ferry crossing at Setubal, a ferry that operates twice hourly, on landing the opposite side the drive is just over two minutes away, either in your own car or the complimentary transfer service provided by the golf course. This Robert Trent Jones Senior designed, Par 72 Championship golf course measures a mere 6,949 yards from the back tees, the golf course received a renovation and new clubhouse in 2008 and offers outstanding views out across the 18th hole and adjacent lake. Holes three and 18 are of note with the third one of the best par 4 holes Trent Jones has designed and included in his own ideal 18 holes, it runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean so club selection is imperative, a choice made by nature when the strong coastal wind intervenes. Troia is a very much an undiscovered golf course and one that is worth every minute extra to get to.
Puerto de Alcudia, Mallorca
After arriving at Palma international airport you would need to travel northeast for just under 50 minutes to the beautiful coastline of the bay of Alcudia. Alcanada golf course is named after the nearby island and is located with some breath-taking views. The golf course is a Trent Jones Junior golf course and only opened is 2003, in its short lifespan it is already sporting the reputation of one of the best Spanish golf courses away from the mainland, it has been voted number 1 golf course in Continental Europe no fewer than 7 times. One of the best holes at Alcanada, is the par-5, 13th hole, which is relatively short at just under 500 yards and plays downhill, giving the opportunity to make the green in two and have an attempt at making eagle. The golf course measures a full, 7,149 yards from the back white tees and has spectacular views along with plenty of sunshine that makes it a must-play when on the island!
Meia Praia, Algarve, Portugal
The Western Algarve is the home of one of the most established golf courses on the coastline. Palmares opened its doors originally back at the end of the 1970’s back then just an 18 hole golf course famed for its January Almond Blossom Tournament. Robert Trent Jones came in and re-designed the golf course and added the additional 9 Links holes. Playing at Palmares gives plenty of scope for different challenges with three separate nines, it is spit, into Alvor which is the higher part of the course running inland and upland too and has some fantastic sea views from a majority of its 9 holes. The Lagos course is similar to its sister as it’s also is partly parkland, this part of the course does incorporate two lakes, before meandering down through the sand-dunes. The last but by no means least is the Praia (Beach) golf course, this course runs from the dunes and a few parkland holes and then has four fantastic holes running alongside the beach, before finishing with a long par 5 back up into the dunes with the green below the clubhouse in the amphitheatre of sand dunes. Alhama Signature GC
Condado de Alhama, Murcia, Spain
The south of Spain is the setting for, without a shadow of a doubt one of Spain’s best golf courses, this is the first of many Jack Nicklaus golf courses that he has put his Signature stamp on, located some thirty-five minutes away the Alhama Signature golf course has circular tee-boxes, fast greens, wide fairways and five huge lakes to test the best golfers. With just over 7,550 yards from the back tees Nicklaus has made every effort to make this course as testing as possible and when he puts pen to paper you know it’s a very special golf course.
Son Gaul GC
Sant Jordi, Mallorca
Son Gaul golf course is located just 14 kilometres east of Palma airport and now voted as the No1 golf course on the island. This 18-hole championship course has already hosted the Porsche Cup World Final. The golf course is spread over 175 hectares, the tee boxes are huge and nearly double the size of many other on the island, the golf course has over 800 olive trees, large expansive bunkers and numerous lakes making this not only one of the most testing but also the most beautiful. The condition of the golf course is better than any you’ve played before, don’t take our word for it!
PGA Catalunya GC
Girona, Costa Brava, Spain
The PGA has put their name on yet another fantastic golf course in the PGA Catalunya golf course, specifically the better of the two golf courses on-site is the Stadium golf course. The course opened its doors in 1991 and has consistently been voted as one of the best in Spain, in fact, its latest ranking is No 77 in the world and No 3 in continental Europe, such ratings are only given to the very best. The golf course is not only beautiful but also testing with its tree-lined fairways (in some places part Of the fairways) and raised Tee boxes means that you are never playing any hole uphill. Golfers playing here have the knowledge that the course has twice hosted the Spanish Open and has recently been extended and now measures a breath-taking 7,333 yards, it has numerous tee positions which means that golfers of all abilities can enjoy what many of Europe’s best golfers rate as one of the best!
Oitavos Dunes GC
Cascais, Lisbon, Portugal
Located 35 minutes west of Lisbon international airport lies another golfing gem of a golf course. Oitavos Dunes golf course designed by the famous Arthur Hills received its inauguration in 2001 and is one of the best links experiences around. This 18 hole Championship golf course runs adjacent to the coastline of Cascais and each and every whole has fantastic views of the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Located on the coast this natural links golf course takes in nature and is a certified sanctuary of Audubon International, many species of plants are therefore protected on the course and also used to maintain the deep natural sand dunes that surround it. This par 71 golf course measures just over 7000 yards and has recently received a great accolade in moving up to 56th in the World Top 100 List, with its all-glass clubhouse and impressive practice facilities playing here is known simply as “The Oitavos Experience”, one that all golfers should experience at least once in their lifetime.
Las Colinas Golf & Country Club
San Miguel de Salinas, Murcia, Spain
Las Colinas is another one of the truly great golf courses that southern Spain has to offer, designed by Cabell Robinson this Troon managed par 71, 18-hole championship golf course was voted by the World Golf Awards as Spain’s Best Golf Course in both 2015 & 2016. The fairways are wide and have undulating greens making putting only for the faint hearted. This course has been designed and uses numerous tee positions, therefore, golfers of all abilities can enjoy its immaculate condition and extensive layout. One of Spain’s greats and one where a buggy is almost essential when in the region take the time to go and play here, you will not be disappointed!
West Cliffs GC
Obidos, Lisbon, Portugal
The latest in a long line of the fantastic Dye family designed golf courses was the latest to open just a few months ago. Cynthia Dye niece to the famed golf course designer Pete Dye, has designed a new fantastic links golf course situated running parallel to Praia D’El Rey Beach. Each hole on the golf course has extensive views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean or the Obidos Lagoon. The West Cliffs golf course measures 7,003 yards from the back tees, however with five sets of tee’s it is designed to be able to played and enjoyed by golfers of all abilities. West Cliffs has already received outstanding reviews and is predicted to be a one of Continental Europe’s greatest golf courses, if not The Best!
